Part of Rangmanch Inc.'s International Theatre Festival, Babel Theatre presents Ay Carmela, an adaptation of the widely represented Spanish play. A tragicomedy about love, loss and the human cost of war.
A theatre company with a variety show travels up and down Spain during times of the Spanish Civil War. Without realising, they accidentally cross the front from the Republicans to the Franco´s side. When they are surprised by the troops, they are forced to improvise a theatrical performance in honor of the army. This adaptation explores also the historical connection of New Zealanders with the Spanish Civil War.
This play is presented in Spanish, however it has been adapated and will utilise media to make it accessible to non Spanish speaking audiences.
The International Theatre Festival 2018 (INTF) is stoked to facilitate and present Ay Carmela to the community. INTF is a flagship offering from Rangmanch Inc, Auckland's beloved theatre company with Indian roots. Since 2008, Rangmanch Inc has produced plays in diverse South Asian languages. In doing so, team Rangmanch Inc hopes to celebrate and nurture the rich artistic and linguistic traditions of communities in New Zealand.
